Casa Buonaparte in Sarzana

Sarzana (La Spezia), Casa Buonaparte
Sarzana (La Spezia), Casa Buonaparte

Beginning in the medieval period, the Florentine family by the name of Buonaparte dispersed to various parts of Italy. One branch of the family established itself in San Miniato, another in Sarzana, and it is from this latter branch that, in the second half of the fifteenth century, some members of the family decided to move to Corsica. And so it is from this branch that Napoleon Bonaparte descended, who in many writings showed himself to be quite clear on the however distant Sarzana roots of his own family.

In Sarzana the Buonaparte family, which managed to marry into a branch of the Malaspina family, lived in a tower house that can still be admired today in the central location of Viale Mazzini. Heavily modified, in part because used as a private residence right up to the present day, the house preserves its medieval aspect only on the ground floor, as seen on the exterior in the beautiful light stone facing and on the interior in the atrium, which can be visited every year during the exhibition "Atriums in bloom".
