The portraits of Louis Bonaparte

Charles–Howard Hodges, Portrait of Louis Bonaparte, king of Holland. Ajaccio, Hôtel de ville, Salon Napoléonien

The father of the future Napoleon III was named by Napoleon King of Holland in 1806, but there are no portraits of him in royal dress. Louis, his brother’s aide–de–camp in Italy and Egypt, always preferred to be depicted in military clothing, as in the painting by Charles–Howard Hodges, a Dutch painter, in the Salon Napoléonien of the Hôtel de Ville, in which Louis is dressed as a colonel, or that of the Maison Bonaparte, a copy of an original by Wicar housed in Versailles, dressed as a general.
At the Academy of Carrara one instead finds a bust of Louis: this work was made by Pierre Cartellier, presumably between 1806 and 1810, the years during which Louis ruled Holland, before abdicating in favour of his son Napoleon Louis. Pierre Cartellier, Louis’ official sculptor, sent a copy of the model in marble to Élisa in Carrara with the intention of obtaining an official portrait from it later. The probable marble original is now kept in Versailles, whereas copies coming from Carrara and made under the direction of Lorenzo Bartolini are in the museum of Malmaison, the Marmottan Library and the Napoleon Museum of Arenberg as well as in private collections.
