Les Milelli in Ajaccio

Ajaccio, Les Milelli
Ajaccio, Les Milelli

Near Ajaccio, the Bonaparte family searched for and found their country residence, Les Milelli, on the gentle hills covered in olive trees that form the backdrop of the city. The house, square in plan and set up like a true agricultural estate, was left to the Jesuits by Paul Emile Odone, the brother–in–law of the emperor’s great–grandfather, Carlo Maria Buonaparte. When Louis XV expelled the Jesuits in 1773, Paul Emile Odone’s property was reclaimed by the Bonaparte family, which regained the property in 1785. The estate was then managed by Cardinal Fesch, who then donated it to the city of Ajaccio.
In 1793, Letizia, Élisa and Pauline Bonaparte, together with the future Cardinal Fesch, having become supporters of a French Corsica, took refuge at Milelli, escaping the followers of Pasquale Paoli. Napoleon stayed there for the last time in 1799, after his return from Egypt.
The deed of purchase of the Milelli complex by Joseph Bonaparte is kept at the Maison Bonaparte in Ajaccio.
